How Hydro Jet Drain Cleaning Works (and When It's Worth It)
Water draining slowly or pooling around your drains and bad smells coming from your drains are signs that you have a blockage. Clogged drains can be a big problem and will only get worse if no action is taken to remove the blockage.
Using harsh chemicals or long and extendable rods were the traditional ways to clear blockages in pipes and sewers. A more modern method is a drain snake that makes holes in the blockage and allows water to flow. The most effective method is a hydro jet cleaner that will shift any blockage and leave your drains and pipes perfectly clear. It is not, however, always the most appropriate treatment and you need to decide which method is best.
How Hydro Jetting Services Work
Hydro jet drain cleaning directs a stream of water at high pressure (up to 4,000 pounds per square inch] into a drain so that any blockages are blasted out and flushed away. The system can employ various nozzles that deal with different types of blockage (to flush out grease or to cut through tree roots, for example).
The nozzle and connected hose are inserted into an access point and move along the pipe, directing jets of water forward to clear the man blockage and backwards to clean the walls of the pipe and push the hose forward. By moving through all affected areas, the pipe is cleaned thoroughly so that water flows freely.
Jetting normally follows a set process:
- The drain is inspected using a remotely controlled camera. The purpose of this is to find the location of the blockage, determine its severity and identify the type of obstruction so a suitable nozzle can be fitted. It is also necessary to establish the condition of the pipes since high pressure jetting can damage those that are in poor condition. In this case, it may be better to use a drain snake, although this will not be as thorough.
- The equipment will be set up, including fitting the type of nozzle that will deal with the blockage.
- The nozzle is put into an access point and fed through to the point of the blockage. Water is then forced through at high pressure, so the forward-facing jets break up and flush away the blockage while those facing to the rear clean the walls of the pipe.
- Once the blockage is cleared and all debris is flushed out, the remote camera is re-inserted to check that the drain is clear so that water flows freely. If not, the process is repeated until satisfactory.
Why Jet Drain Cleaning Should be Undertaken
As well as obstructing the water flow, blocked drains can be a health hazard due to a build-up of food waste and other materials that will decompose. It's important, therefore, that you keep your drains clear by periodic jetting. This is a preventative measure to avoid blockages rather than waiting for them to occur.
There are other reasons to keep your drains clear:
- Blockages can cause damage to your pipes due to the resulting pressure. Regular cleaning will avoid cracks, leaks or bursts and repairs that will become increasingly expensive the longer the blockage exists.
- Avoid the health risks caused by mould, bacteria and pests that breed in the blockage material.
- Ensure the water flows freely so sinks, baths and showers drain quickly.
- Prevent unpleasant smells that result from decomposing materials in the blockage.
- Leaks caused by blockages can discharge pollutants into the surrounding area. Keeping your drains running freely will prevent this and help to protect the environment. Jetting with water will also be better for the environment than using harsh chemicals that can be harmful.
- Plumbing problems will be a deterrent for property buyers so avoiding them will help maintain the property's value if you consider selling.
It's always better to be proactive and take preventative measures rather than waiting for a blockage to occur.
When Jet Drain Cleaning is Worth it
There are various methods of clearing blockages in drains but high-pressure jetting is the most effective and provides a long-term solution by completely cleaning the pipes. That contrasts with snaking, which may simply make a hole on the blockage so water can flow but may require repeat treatment.
Hydro jetting is the best choice in most situations:
- If the same drain is persistently getting blocked, this suggests it needs a thorough clean that only jetting can achieve.
- Large mains sewers, especially in commercial areas with heavy use, benefit from regular hydro jet clearance.
- Regular cleaning (every 1-2 years in residential areas and more frequently for commercial drains) will keep the drains clear, prevent problems and extend the life of pipes.
- Other methods, such as drain snakes, sometimes struggle to clear certain blockages, especially grease, oil and sludge build-ups plus the infiltration of tree roots. Only a hydro jet cleaner will do a thorough job and will leave the drain perfectly clean, so future obstructions are less likely.
- Only use high pressure water if the pipes are in good condition to prevent further damage. Fragile or broken pipes are best replaced, otherwise use a drain snake or other less intrusive method.
