Why Stormwater Drain Repair and Maintenance is Necessary
Stormwater drains play an essential role in removing excess water from your property. They divert rainwater away from your home, other buildings and surrounding land, generally into drainage systems and eventually into municipal treatment plants or natural waterways.
Stormwater drains protect your property from damage and are particularly effective during storms and periods of heavy rain. When they fail to work properly or do not work at all, however, you need to take action to resolve the problem because this can eventually become very serious if not dealt with quickly.
Signs and Causes of Stormwater Drain Problems
If you have problems that necessitate stormwater drainage system repair, there are generally some warning signs.
These include:
- Gutters that overflow during rain.
- Water draining slowly from gutters and downpipes.
- Bad smells coming from drains that may indicate that debris is trapped and is decomposing.
- Water pooling around drains or in low areas of land after rain.
- Unusual gurgling noises from drains.
- Damp patches on walls due to water seeping in rather than draining away.
Problems that require blocked stormwater drain services may be caused by:
- An accumulation of debris, such as twigs, leaves and mud, that can obstruct the flow of water.
- Birds and rodents that may build nests in gutters and downpipes, which block water flow.
- Badly designed and installed drainage systems with poor connections to the sewage system.
- Clogged gutter guards.
- Tree roots that penetrate cracked pipes in their search for water, causing blockages and leaks.
- Old pipes that have deteriorated due to age and regular use, causing leaks and blockages.
- Waste and debris that has been put into the waste system but does not degrade.

The Damage Caused by Blocked Stormwater Drains
When problems are identified, swift action is essential to complete a stormwater drain repair. Occasional flooding may be an inconvenience but the long-term problems that it causes are much more serious than that. Failing to complete repairs quickly can lead to very serious problems that are difficult and expensive to resolve.
If water from storms is not taken away as it should be, it can lead to flooding of basements and other parts of the property. Exposure to water over a long period can cause significant structural damage, including weakened foundations, that can be very expensive to repair and can be dangerous if not corrected.
A failure of the stormwater system can also cause water to overflow into local waterways. This water can contain various contaminants and can disrupt local ecosystems and harm local plants and animal life.
Flooding from blocked drains can undermine foundations and cause erosion. Standing water will also attract insects, particularly mosquitoes, and can lead to a build-up of mould. These can all be hazardous to health and, if you fail to comply with stormwater regulations, you may be liable for significant financial penalties.
How We Rectify Stormwater Drain Problems
If you have problems with your stormwater drain, there are a number of ways we can put them right. The first task is to inspect the drainage system to identify the exact problem and its location. This will normally be done using a remotely controlled CCTV camera that can travel the length of the drain, viewing the interior so that excavation is not necessary.
Once the problem is located, we can use various methods to resolve it:
- High pressure jetting uses water at high pressure to break up and dislodge debris so it is cleared out of the drain. This method will also clean the inside of the pipes so that water will flow much more freely and mean the system works more efficiently and future obstructions are much less likely.
- A drain auger (also known as a plumber's snake) is a flexible rod that is inserted into the drain to break up and remove blockages. This tool can extend well into the pipe system and is sufficiently flexible to go around bends.
- Stormwater pipe replacement may be necessary if the drain has collapsed or is so badly damaged that simply clearing the blockage is not enough. For pipes between ten and sixty centimetres in diameter and that have only cracks or minor breaks, pipe relining is the best option because excavation is then not necessary. However, for other sizes and more extensive damage, the pipe will need to be dug up and completely replaced.
We will always use the best and most effective method to resolve the issue. In some cases, a combination of techniques may be needed to fix the problem properly.
Preventing Future Issues
You can sometimes fix minor problems yourself using a plunger or drain snake although professional help is needed for anything more serious, such as badly broken drains and tree root intrusion. To avoid problems in future, however, regular drainage inspection and maintenance are recommended.
Clean your gutters and downpipes regularly, especially after storms and when leaves are likely to block them. Fit gutter guards if you get a lot of falling leaves and check them regularly for blockages.
Ensure you have adequate drainage and check it regularly. And do not plant trees too close to the house so you can reduce the risk of root intrusion that will damage your drains.
